Supplying a JCB S1930E Scissor Lift for the Abbey Group’s Bigg Market Redevelopment
Published: May 28, 2025
Milo Access Platforms was pleased to support the Abbey Group in the ongoing redevelopment of a prominent building in Newcastle upon Tyne’s Bigg Market—the former TJ Hughes site, now transformed into a new Hooters venue.
To assist with the installation of promotional window graphics on the upper floor of the building, Milo Access Platforms supplied a JCB S1930E electric scissor lift on a short-term hire basis.
Project Overview
This project called for the display of Abbey Group-branded vinyl decals across the building’s upper-level windows. These graphics highlighted the group’s involvement in the high-profile conversion and acted as a temporary visual statement during the latter stages of redevelopment.
Milo Access Platforms was responsible for providing the access solution required to complete the work safely and efficiently—namely, the JCB S1930E, a compact and capable electric scissor lift.
Why the JCB S1930E?
The JCB S1930E was chosen for its compact footprint and suitability for urban sites with restricted space. Key features include:
- Platform Height: 5.8 metres (19 feet)
- Working Height: 7.8 metres (25.6 feet)
- Safe Working Load: 230 kg (505 lbs)
- Narrow Chassis: Only 0.76 metres wide, ideal for indoor use and standard door access
- Electric Operation: Quiet and zero-emissions—ideal for interior and sensitive work environments
- Foldable Rails & Control Cradle: Designed for versatility in confined or awkward spaces
These features made the S1930E the ideal choice for enabling graphics installers to work securely at height on the building’s upper façade.
Sticker Installation Process (Delivered by Abbey Group Contractors)
While Milo Access Platforms did not directly participate in the application of the graphics, the equipment played a key role in supporting the process. The installation of large-scale vinyl window stickers typically involves:
- Cleaning the Glass: Removing dust, oils, and residue using a specialist cleaning solution to ensure proper adhesion.
- Positioning: Aligning each decal and using temporary markers or tape to verify accuracy.
- Application: Carefully smoothing the graphics onto the glass, using squeegees to remove air bubbles and wrinkles.
- Final Finishing: Ensuring all edges are sealed and visuals are professionally presented.
The equipment’s stable platform and ease of control ensured installers could focus fully on achieving a clean, well-aligned finish.
Results
The successful deployment of the JCB S1930E enabled Abbey Group’s contractors to complete the installation on time, without disruption, and in accordance with the branding goals of the project. The scissor lift’s reliability and practical design provided safe access to hard-to-reach areas and played a supporting role in the visual transformation of the Bigg Market location.
